What artist helped popularise the Zanku (legwork) dance?

Zlatan

Zlatan Ibile, born Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael, is credited with creating and popularizing the Zanku dance, also known as “Legwork,” in Nigeria. The term “Zanku” stands for “Zlatan Abeg No Kill Us,” reflecting the energetic and intricate nature of the dance. Zlatan introduced this dance in 2018, and it quickly gained traction across the Nigerian music scene.

The Zanku dance first gained widespread attention through Zlatan’s collaboration with Chinko Ekun and Lil Kesh on the track “Able God,” where the dance was prominently featured. Building on this momentum, Zlatan released his single “Zanku (Leg Work)” later that year, further cementing the dance’s popularity. The accompanying music video showcased Zlatan and various street dancers performing the dynamic moves, captivating audiences nationwide.

Zanku’s influence extended beyond Nigeria, with international artists and dancers incorporating the moves into their performances. Notably, Beyoncé featured the dance in her music video for “Already,” highlighting its global appeal. Zlatan’s innovation not only introduced a new dance craze but also influenced the sound and style of contemporary Nigerian music, blending energetic rhythms with vibrant dance steps.
