Niger State

The largest state in Nigeria by landmass is Niger State, covering an area of 76,363 square kilometers. It is located in the North Central region of Nigeria and was formed in 1976 when the then North-Western State was divided into Niger State and Sokoto State. The state is named after the River Niger, which runs through it and plays a significant role in its geography and economy. Niger State is known for its diverse landscape, featuring rolling hills, fertile river valleys, and rich cultural heritage.

The state is home to two of Nigeria’s major hydroelectric power stations: the Kainji Dam and the Shiroro Dam, with the new Zungeru Dam also located there. The Gurara Falls, a picturesque waterfall, is another notable attraction in the state, located in the Gurara Local Government Area. Niger State’s cultural and historical significance is also noteworthy. It is the home state of two former Nigerian military heads of state: Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar. The state is inhabited by a variety of indigenous tribes, including the Nupe, Gbagyi, Kamuku, Kambari, and Hausa, contributing to its rich cultural diversity. The state’s economy is primarily based on agriculture and mining, with significant deposits of gold, marble, and other minerals.
