Hausa-Fulani

As of 2025, Nigeria’s largest ethnic group is the Hausa-Fulani, comprising approximately 30% of the nation’s population. Predominantly residing in the northern regions, the Hausa and Fulani peoples have, over time, integrated culturally and linguistically, often collectively referred to as Hausa-Fulani. This amalgamation has significantly influenced the sociopolitical dynamics of Nigeria, with the Hausa-Fulani playing a prominent role in the country’s governance since its independence in 1960. 

Following the Hausa-Fulani, the Yoruba and Igbo are the second and third largest ethnic groups, respectively. The Yoruba, accounting for about 15.5% of the population, are primarily located in the southwestern part of Nigeria. The Igbo, making up approximately 15.2%, predominantly inhabit the southeastern region. Both groups have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s cultural, economic, and political landscapes, each maintaining distinct languages, traditions, and social structures. 

Nigeria’s rich ethnic diversity extends beyond these major groups, encompassing over 300 ethnic communities and more than 500 languages spoken across the country. This mosaic of cultures presents both opportunities and challenges, influencing national unity and policy-making. Efforts to promote inclusivity and equitable representation continue to be pivotal in Nigeria’s ongoing development and cohesion.
