What do the green and white colours of the Nigerian flag represent?

Natural and agricultural wealth & peace and unity

The two vertical green stripes represent Nigeria’s natural resources and agricultural wealth. This reflects the country’s fertile land, forests, and mineral reserves, which have long been central to its economy. The specific shade, known as “Nigerian Green”, is an emerald hue standardized to symbolize this connection to nature.

The central white stripe signifies peace and unity among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious groups. Chosen to foster harmony in a nation of over 250 ethnicities, the white band underscores the goal of cohesion amid cultural diversity. The colour’s immaculate purity reinforces this ideal.

Designed in 1959 by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the flag’s simplicity was intentional to avoid favouring any single group. While Akinkunmi’s original design included a red sun (symbolizing divine guidance), it was removed to focus on the core themes of natural abundance and national solidarity. Adopted on October 1, 1960, during independence from British rule, the flag’s colours remain unchanged as a testament to Nigeria’s enduring values.
